Why choose Cardinal Academy?

By Emily Bergstrom, Executive Director

I have been asked recently how Cardinal Academy is different from other alternative programs. While they may be alike in some ways, Cardinal Academy is a specially designed school, created specifically with the needs of young parents in mind.

Some of the the things Cardinal Academy offers:

  1. A safe, calm, judgment-free place to be with other young moms and dads.

Being a young parent can be very isolating. When you get to be around other parents, you learn and grow together and build a community of lifelong friendships with people who understand what you are going through.

  1. Two meals a day

This is one less thing for you to worry about! You can have peace of mind knowing you’ll get two delicious meals each day when you come to school.

  1. School store: diapers, wipes, formula, baby clothes, toys, toiletries, laundry detergent, maternity clothes, regular clothes (both men’s and women’s), shoes

If you need it, we can help you get it. The Salvation Army stocks a store full of most all of the things you need for you and your baby. All you need to do is come to school and work hard.

  1. Access to the food pantry

Worried about being able to get groceries? Thanks to The Salvation Army, you’ll have access to a food pantry right on site.

  1. Child Care Center

Trying to do school from home? Having trouble focusing while trying to take care of a baby? We can help!  On-site childcare allows you to bring your baby to school and have him or her right downstairs so that you can focus on your goal of getting an education.

  1. Flexibility

Do you need to work? Want to try an internship? Need a shortened schedule? We can help with that. Just ask! This specially designed school is built for you and we’ll do everything we can to help it work for you.

  1. Access to a social worker that can help connect them with other community resources.

Life can be hard. Sometimes you need someone to talk to. Or maybe you need help figuring out housing or paying bills. Whatever is going on, you can work with social workers and counselors right on site who are dedicated to helping you be successful.

  1. Parenting class

Babies don’t come with an instruction manual. Parenting classes help you to learn everything you need to know about raising healthy, happy, connected kids.

  1. Pregnancy class

Pregnancy can be scary. On-site pregnancy classes help you to better understand the changes happening in your body and help to prepare you for delivery.
